Reproductive conflict in the honey bee

چکیده
Dufour’s gland secretion may allow workerhoneybees to discriminate between queen-laid and work-er-laid eggs. To investigate this, we combined thechemical analysis of individually treated eggs with anegg removal bioassay. We partitioned queen Dufour’sgland into hydrocarbon and ester fractions. The bioassayshowed that worker-laid eggs treated with either wholegland extract, ester fraction or synthetic gland esters wereremoved more slowly than untreated worker-laid eggs. However, the effect only lasted up to 20 h. Worker-laideggs treated with the hydrocarbon fraction were removedat the same rate as untreated eggs. The amount of esterwhich reduced the egg removal rate was far higher thanthat naturally found on queen-laid or worker-laid eggs, and at natural ester levels no effect was found. Our resultsindicate that esters or hydrocarbons probably do notfunction as the signal by which eggs can be discriminated.

Partial ovary development is widespread in honey bees and comparable to other eusocial bees and wasps
Honey bee workers have few opportunities for direct reproduction because their ovary development is chemically suppressed by queens and worker-laid eggs are destroyed by workers. While workers with fully developed ovaries are rare in honey bee colonies, we show that partial ovary development is common. Across nine studies, an average of 6% to 43% of workers had partially developed ovaries in qu...
متن کاملStudy on anti inflammatory effect of subcutaneous honey bee venom injection and dermal application of cream containing honey bee venom in adjuvant-induced arthritic rats
Honey bee sting is used in some societies as a treatment of inflammation in joint diseases such as arthritis. To investigate the effect of honey bee venom in reducing inflammation, we selected 30 male Wister rats which were divided in to 6 groups. Except group 1, all remaining groups received 0.5 ml of complete Freund’s adjuvant to induce arthritis. After 9 days, all animals that received adj...
متن کاملHost adaptations reduce the reproductive success of Varroa destructor in two distinct European honey bee populations
Honey bee societies (Apis mellifera), the ectoparasitic mite Varroa destructor, and honey bee viruses that are vectored by the mite, form a complex system of host-parasite interactions. Coevolution by natural selection in this system has been hindered for European honey bee hosts since apicultural practices remove the mite and consequently the selective pressures required for such a process. An...
متن کاملHigh Fructose Corn Syrup: A Potential Feed for Honey Bee
The honey bee obtains its all nutritional demands from nectar and pollen. In the case of nectar and pollen limitation, beekeepers use a substitute. It has been a long time that sucrose is used as the conventional substitute for nectar and pollen in the bee feeding to provide its nutritional needs during winter and stimulation of springchr('39')s larval nourishment. High fructose corn syrup is ...
متن کاملTesting the kinship theory of intragenomic conflict in honey bees (Apis mellifera).
Sexual reproduction brings genes from two parents (matrigenes and patrigenes) together into one individual. These genes, despite being unrelated, should show nearly perfect cooperation because each gains equally through the production of offspring. However, an individual's matrigenes and patrigenes can have different probabilities of being present in other relatives, so kin selection could act ...
متن کاملIntergenerational reproductive parasitism in a stingless bee.
Insect colonies have been traditionally regarded as closed societies comprised of completely sterile workers ruled over by a single once-mated queen. However, over the past 15 years, microsatellite studies of parentage have revealed that this perception is far from the truth (Beekman & Oldroyd 2008). First, we learned that honey bee queens are far more promiscuous than we had previously imagine...
